It's an ammo can opener. Military surplus ammo comes in giant spam cans on steroids.
They're big, thick, and likely covered in a lead-based paint. (not to mention filled with who-the-fuck-knows-what kind of dirt/spores from decades past and far off lands) Opening them without the can opener is an exercise in frustration and attempts to avoid injury.
But that's half the fun! :)
My ammo comes in cardboardish boxes.
